Roddy's Mum, Irene, presents the Roddy Devlin Trophy to Paul Randon
Roddy's putter comes home!
I considered it would be nice for the Devlin family to have a photo of their ‘handing over’ of the new Roddy Devlin Trophy. Roddy’s Mum (Irene) was understandably nervous to visit the Club and maybe be alongside unknown people. (Whilst very bright, she is 91 years old)
However, she was happy to ‘hand over the trophy’ to me at her home, alongside Roddy’s two brothers, Lawrence and Brian. Accordingly, I went there tonight and herewith a photo with the new silver trophy.
Now there is quite a story relating to Roddy’s famous distinctive putter...
The history is, that the putter originally belonged to a neighbour of Roddy’s parents, who was a caddy for a Professional Lady Golfer. This neighbour gave the putter to Roddy’s Dad...and eventually it ended up with Roddy, circa 1980
Unfortunately, following Roddy’s passing away, it was given to a Charity Shop, together with his golf bag and other clubs. Recently, I received an email from a member, who purchased the putter, several months ago. He could not get on with it. Another member noticed it and suggested it may be Roddy Devlin’s old putter.
It is indeed Roddy’s old putter. His Mum was tearful when it was presented to the family.
To my embarrassment, but sincerely honoured, they offered the putter to me. Very emotional, but undoubtedly I am delighted.
