Originally billed in the Walmley Golf Club online diary as ‘The Captain's Shooting’ it seemed too good an opportunity to miss, so 88 members turned up to have an early crack at new Captain Tom Biggs-Hayes.
During a full English breakfast, Steve Carter advised that the days activities would be limited to golf, and proceeded with a draw for the teams that soon assumed all the characteristics of a cabaret, where no one was spared the odd barb or two.
On the stroke of 10.00, on a beautiful sunny February morning, on a course with greens that we’d have been happy with in July a few years ago, a shotgun start set off the 22 teams for a best two from four challenge.
A few hours later, all returned to be fed with pork baps, whilst the cards were checked, and eventually the winners were announced.
In third place with an eight under par 80 were the early favourites - Richard Evans, Jamie Gibson, Steve Langdon & Tony McMahon.
In second place – on count back with 84/38 – were John Madden, Nick Hill, Mark Davis and Mr. Captain, TBH himself, immediately rueing his four putt on the 18th.
That just left Russ Wests’ team of Don Field, George Griffith & Adrian Matthews to win the day with their better back nine of 84/40
Congratulations to Captain Tom for heading up a great start to his year – he even got the weather right in the face of the incoming ‘Storm Ciara’ - and especially to Steve Carter who made sure that that Tom's year was successfully launched.
