The ‘WRY’ Scramble first trialled as a test event three years ago is now a popular permanent fixture in the Walmley rota of annual competitions.
A mixture of twenty two four ball teams contested this year’s edition on a late autumn day and again the unique format was enjoyed by a full field of players.
The scramble was open to all members, with teams having to play six holes from each of the White, Red and Yellow tees in addition to following the Florida scramble rules. Flo’WRY’da – get it?? Choosing the tees and tactics that best suits the team line-up adds a whole new challenge to the decision making process.
A mid-morning ‘shotgun’ start ensured that everyone finished at a similar time and were all together for Pascal’s Boeuf Bourguignon ‘bar meal’ and presentation of the prizes by Madam Captain Jane Mitchell.
The excellent condition of the course ensured some exceptional scoring with the winning team of John Forde, Andy Regan, Andy Gibbins and Steve Morley recording five birdies in their gross 65, nett 56.3.
Jean Campbell, Ginny Getty, Sandra Evans & Jan Palin collected the prize as the leading ladies four, whilst Alan and Pam Carter & Ita Rowley were coaxed (coached?) into the award for the leading mixed team by Steve Carter. Further team prizes went the leading gents four & runners up, Paul Ledwith, Mike Craggs, Richard Jephcott and Steve Langdon with a gross 63, nett 58 total, and the Ray Getty, Paul Randon, Rob Tompkin & Sue Hart team and John & Trisha Feasey, John Withers & Len Evans fourball were also ‘winners’.
Nearest the pin prizes went to Sharon Brown & Oz Patel (5th), Sue Hart & Rob Tompkin (9th/11th) and Debs Reynolds and OzP – again - on the 18th.
After a very successful day, organiser Lawrie Thornton declared himself delighted with the support and the opportunity to spread the prizes throughout the field. “The format offers a different and enjoyable golfing team challenge and is hopefully now a Walmley event to look forward to”.
