Mr Captain awards Ben Groutage the Merifield Cleek
A modest field of 48 players competed over 36 holes for the 2020 Merifield Cleek and Usher Cup.
After the morning round there were two clear leaders in the Merifield Cleek, Ben Groutage and James Hemphill who both had 73’s .
In the Usher Cup Thomas Eustace lead with a net 69, the only player under par net. Thomas played well in the afternoon and held on to win the Usher Cup by one from James Hemphill.
There was growing excitement in the afternoon as reports came through that Ben and James were still level after the 15th hole. The tension grew as Ben’s tee shot on the 17th found the trees and he had to play back out to the fairway.
From 100 yards, Ben got up and down to keep the game level with a great putt and James just missed birdie.
The 18th served up more excitement as both players had opportunities to win. After missing their par putts, the players had to go back to the 18th to play sudden death.
As excitement grew, the players began to feel the strain and the light was failing. Finally, Ben managed to get up and down to make par and win his first Merifelid Cleek after many attempts.
Congratulation to Ben and commiserations to James, still, he is a multiple winner, so he might just give Ben his win.
